A medical doctor in Georgia has pleaded guilty to using Bitcoin to pay someone on the dark web $16,000 in an attempt to kill his girlfriend. The plot was uncovered by the FBI after receiving a tip from a confidential informant who monitors the dark web for credible and dangerous solicitations for murder. The girlfriend was placed under FBI protection, and the doctor's identity and the dark web marketplace were kept secret to aid future investigations. The doctor, who has since been fired and had his medical license expired, made a payment of $8,000 in Bitcoin for the hitman, but mistakenly entered the wrong address and lost the money. He made additional payments before the order was approved, and even sought updates on the job's progress on a dark web forum. Eventually, he confessed to his actions and the murder plot was canceled. The case is being investigated by the FBI, and the doctor's sentencing is scheduled for January 18, 2024. This incident is not the first time Bitcoin has been used in criminal activities, as there have been other cases of individuals using the cryptocurrency to hire hitmen for illegal purposes.
