Security company SlowMist has issued a warning about a series of cryptocurrency thefts orchestrated by fake journalists. The first instance of this fraudulent campaign was reported on October 14, when a Twitter user named Masiwei alerted the community about an attack on friend.tech for account theft. SlowMist's security team analyzed the situation and discovered that the attackers were sending links with malicious JavaScript scripts. The attackers posed as journalists from reputable news agencies and gained a significant following on Twitter. They targeted Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs) and guided their victims to join conversations on Telegram, where they provided an interview outline to establish credibility. After the interview, the attackers asked the victims to fill out a form and open a phishing link, which aimed to trick users into revealing their friend.tech account information. To protect against phishing attacks, SlowMist recommended increasing awareness of social engineering, being cautious when clicking on unknown links, and using anti-phishing plugins. Hackers have already stolen millions of digital assets from friend.tech users through SIM-swapping attacks. Manifold Trading has estimated that $20 million out of friend.tech's total locked value of $50 million is at risk.
