The National Crime Agency (NCA) in the United Kingdom is taking action to combat cryptocurrency scams and fraud. To address this issue, the NCA plans to create a specialized team dedicated to countering these illicit activities. The team will investigate crypto-related crimes and will be positioned within either the National Cyber Crime Unit (NCCU) or the Digital Asset Team. The NCA is looking to recruit six individuals who will form the core of this new team. Their responsibilities will include providing specialized expertise in cryptocurrency investigations, identifying potential targets for further development, conducting blockchain forensic investigations, and analyzing relevant materials. This move by the NCA comes as the UK pushes for regulation in the crypto industry, aiming to create a regulated environment that fosters growth while protecting users from fraudulent activities. The UK has been actively hiring crypto investigators and has passed legislation to regulate cryptocurrencies.
The Financial Services and Markets bill provides a framework for the digital asset sector, including measures such as clear warnings about risks associated with crypto investments and a cooling-off period for new customers. The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has issued alerts against firms suspected of illegally promoting cryptoassets.
