Australian TV anchor Cheng Lei has been released by China and returned to her family in Australia, according to Australia's Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. Cheng was detained for over three years on espionage charges, accused of illegally supplying state secrets overseas. The details of the allegations against her were never revealed, and the Chinese court repeatedly delayed handing down a verdict. Cheng's release followed the completion of the legal process in China. The Chinese Ministry of State Security stated that Cheng was deported after completing her sentence. The ministry claimed that Cheng had pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 35 months in prison. Cheng's case had raised concerns about her well-being, as she faced health challenges and limited contact with the outside world during her detention. The release of Cheng is seen as a positive development in the strained relations between China and Australia.
