A Japanese man who was detained in March has been formally arrested by China, according to officials from Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Japanese Embassy in Beijing. The arrest of the Japanese national, who was reportedly an employee of a pharmaceutical firm in Tokyo, could increase concerns among foreign businesses in China. This year, there has been a crackdown on international consulting firms on national security grounds. The Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary has appealed to the Chinese side for the man's early release. The man, who is in his 50s, was arrested in mid-October. He has lived in China for about 20 years. The Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not released any further information about the man or his charges. Foreign businesses and investors have grown wary of rising risks in China, including the possibility of raids and detentions. This has led to a decrease in foreign direct investment in the country.
