The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued a warning about the dangers of affixing hard stick-on decorations, such as rhinestones, to the center of a vehicle's steering wheel. These decorations can become projectiles in a crash and cause serious injuries, even fatalities. The NHTSA cited a case where a driver lost sight in one eye after a rhinestone-adorned emblem became dislodged and struck them in the face during a collision. The agency described these potentially dangerous decorations as metal or plastic plates with adhesive backs that cover the vehicle's logo in the center of the steering wheel. Although the NHTSA did not mention any specific products or manufacturers, it emphasized the general risk associated with these steering wheel decorations. Most vehicles are equipped with driver-side airbags that deploy from the middle of the steering wheel during a serious impact. Factory-added decorations are designed to remain in place when the airbag inflates, providing cushioning to the driver's head and face. However, aftermarket decorations can pose a hazard by dislodging and becoming dangerous projectiles in a crash.
