TikTok, the Chinese social media platform, plans to invest $1.5 billion to become the majority shareholder of an e-commerce unit of Indonesia's GoTo Gojek Tokopedia. This move comes after TikTok's online shopping business was suspended by regulators in Indonesia. The country banned online shopping on social media platforms to protect smaller merchants and user data. TikTok had previously launched its TikTok Shop in Indonesia to compete with other online sellers. Shares in GoTo dropped after the announcement of the deal with TikTok. The transaction will be completed by the first quarter of 2024, and TikTok will provide future funding without diluting GoTo's ownership. Tokopedia, Indonesia's largest e-commerce platform, competes with Shopee and Lazada in the country's growing e-commerce market. The industry is expected to reach $160 billion by 2030.
