A US-based cybersecurity firm called Unciphered has issued a warning stating that bitcoin wallets created before 2016 may be at risk of vulnerability, potentially putting billions of dollars worth of BTC in danger. The firm has identified a vulnerability in BitcoinJS, a popular package for generating crypto wallets, which has led to the creation of a significant number of vulnerable wallets over the years. Unciphered estimates that approximately 1.4 million BTC, with a value of $1.2-2.1 billion, are at risk due to weak cryptographic keys. The vulnerability, named Randstorm, is caused by a combination of bugs, design decisions, and API changes that affect the random number generation of web browsers between 2011 and 2015. The firm has alerted various wallet providers and urged users to move their funds to more secure wallets.
