The designer of "Mutant Ape Planet" NFTs, Aurelien Michel, has pleaded guilty to wire fraud conspiracy and could face up to five years in prison. Michel confessed to deceiving NFT investors by making false promises of giveaways, tokens, merchandise collections, and staking features. He then carried out a fraudulent scheme, withdrawing investors' funds and pocketing nearly $3 million. Michel was arrested in January 2023 and is a French citizen residing in the United Arab Emirates. He created knockoff NFTs sold on the Ethereum blockchain for around $500 per unit. Michel has agreed to forfeit $1.4 million and awaits sentencing.
