The News Media Alliance, a trade group representing nearly 2,000 outlets in the US, has accused AI technology companies of using news material to train their chatbots. The group's research found that companies like OpenAI and Google have copied and used content from news sources to train their bots, giving more credibility to information from reputable publishers. The Alliance argues that these companies are not obtaining proper permissions or compensating publishers for the use of their content. They also reject the argument that AI bots have simply learned facts, stating that the models retain expressions of facts from copyrighted training materials. To address this issue, the Alliance recommends that policymakers recognize the infringement of unauthorized use of copyrighted material and allow publishers to license their content on fair terms.
