An image showing the aftermath of the explosion at Al-Ahli Baptist Hospital in Gaza City on October 18, 2023, has been circulating. While some news organizations, such as The New York Times and BBC, have apologized for their initial coverage of the incident, others have not admitted any mistakes. CNN, the Associated Press, Reuters, Al Jazeera, and The Wall Street Journal were contacted to clarify their initial reporting, but only Reuters stood by their coverage. CNN initially reported that Israel was responsible for the explosion, but later edited the article without acknowledging the error. The BBC and The Times have apologized for their coverage, acknowledging that they relied too heavily on Hamas' claims without verifying them. Bill Grueskin, a professor at Columbia Journalism School, believes that all news organizations involved should issue similar notes explaining their mistakes, as it is expected for newsrooms to own up to their errors.
