Professor Fatma Ozkul, an expert in crypto assets and blockchain technology, has been appointed by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to the central bank's rate-setting committee. This appointment was announced in a decree on December 22. Ozkul has been a lecturer at Istanbul's Marmara University since 2012, specializing in accounting, finance, and auditing. She is knowledgeable in blockchain technology and digital assets, having authored a book on crypto asset accounting in 2022. Ozkul's appointment makes her the newest addition to Turkey's central bank Monetary Policy Committee, which is responsible for setting the benchmark interest rate to control inflation. Turkey has experienced a surge in crypto adoption, ranking fourth globally in terms of crypto transaction volumes. A recent survey revealed that over half of the Turkish population is now participating in the crypto market, with growing interest from women and the younger generation. Turkish authorities are considering regulatory measures for the country's crypto market, focusing on licensing and taxation to comply with international standards.
