Ethereum developers are expressing opposition to Vitalik Buterin's proposal to increase the gas limit on the blockchain. They are concerned about the size of the blockchain state and the potential consequences that could result from raising the gas limit. Increasing the gas limit could pose risks to state size, missed block rate, synchronization times, history size, and client diversity. Developers are suggesting solutions to address these concerns if increasing the gas limit is deemed necessary. The current size of the blockchain state is 267 gigabytes, and the blockchain history is about 900 gigabytes. This could lead to further growth if gas sizes increase. The growth rate of the state storage has been almost 2 GB per month, making it difficult to access and modify such a large amount of data. Another challenge is the size of the history, which has doubled in the last three years. Implementing EIP-4444 is seen as a potential solution to address the growth of history. Raising the gas limit will also make it more difficult to build new clients for the mainnet and slow down the full sync process. Developers are calling for monitoring and metrics to be in place to assess the effects of changes before implementing them.
