Indian law enforcement has arrested Simpy Bhardwaj, also known as Simpy Gaur, the wife of Ajay Bhardwaj, in connection with the ongoing investigation into the GainBitcoin cryptocurrency scam. Ajay Bhardwaj and Mahender Bhardwaj, the main suspects, have managed to evade capture and are currently on the run. Simpy is believed to have helped them escape and disposed of a mobile phone when authorities apprehended her. The arrest of Simpy Bhardwaj, who was handling illicitly gained bitcoins, could potentially revive the investigation into the scam, which has left victims devastated since the death of its mastermind, Amit Bhardwaj, in 2022. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has already seized properties worth $8.4 million and sought assistance from foreign countries in the investigation. The ED has also revealed that the scam collected $800 million in bitcoins from victims in 2017, with the proceeds being transferred to overseas companies and used to purchase properties. Simpy Bhardwaj has been granted eight days of custodial interrogation by the court, and the ED has seized high-end cars and valuable jewelry as part of the investigation. India has seen a rise in crypto frauds due to the lack of proper regulations in the country.
