The copyright for the early version of Mickey Mouse featured in Walt Disney's 1928 film "Steamboat Willie" has expired, allowing the character to enter the public domain for the first time on January 1, 2024. While this means we may see more reinterpretations of the character, Disney still holds trademarks on the more modern versions of Mickey Mouse. The company will likely take legal action against anyone who recreates a version of the cartoon that closely resembles the current Mickey. However, exceptions exist for educational purposes, satire, or parody. This follows the recent expiration of the copyright for A.A. Milne's original Winnie the Pooh character, which has also opened the door for new interpretations. There is a possibility that the early version of Mickey could receive similar treatment.
