Apple has been granted permission to modify its smartwatches in order to bypass the Apple Watch ban imposed by a US court. The modification involves removing the pulse oximeter function, which allows customers to monitor their health. The approval for the redesign came from a federal court filing, with Apple successfully proposing the elimination of the pulse oximeter function. The US Customs and Border Protection enforcement branch confirmed that Apple can continue importing the smartwatches as long as they do not include this feature. Apple had previously sued to temporarily block a ruling from the US International Trade Commission that prevented the import of certain Apple Watch models due to patent infringement. The ban went into effect on December 26, but a federal appeals court temporarily halted the import ban on December 27. Apple expects the appeals court to rule on its motion to block the ban as the appeals process continues. The company had taken measures to resume imports, including submitting a redesign of the affected watch models for approval. Apple has marketed its smartwatch as a life-saving device, but its legal battle with Masimo, the technology company that sued Apple for patent infringement, poses a threat to its reputation. Sales of the affected watch models were briefly halted but resumed after the injunction on December 27.
