Civil rights complaints allege UPenn and Wellesley allowed antisemitism to run rampant.
A Jewish legal rights group has accused the University of Pennsylvania and Wellesley College of violating federal civil rights law by allowing discrimination against Jews. The Brandeis Center filed complaints with the US Department of Education, claiming that both schools failed to adequately address harassment of Jewish students. The complaints argue that the schools have violated Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. There has been a rise in tension on college campuses due to recent terror attacks in Israel and the ongoing Israel-Hamas war. The University of Pennsylvania reported threatening antisemitic emails and messages projected onto campus buildings. The Brandeis complaint against Wellesley cited an email from a residential advisor that expressed anti-Zionist views. The Department of Education has reminded colleges and universities of their responsibility to protect students from discrimination. Education Secretary Miguel Cardona stated that withholding federal support could be a potential consequence. Some wealthy donors, such as Henry Swieca, have resigned from boards in protest of how schools have responded to antisemitism.
