Elon Musk has been advocating for the colonization of Mars for nearly two decades, despite the high cost associated with such a mission. He sees his interplanetary ambitions as a moral calling rather than just a business plan. The financial aspect of SpaceX's plans for a Mars settlement is one of the most challenging hurdles, and even Musk himself cannot estimate the total cost. The last space program that came close to Musk's goals was NASA's Apollo program, which cost well over $280 billion in today's dollars. While Musk's personal wealth has grown significantly, thanks to stock awards from Tesla, it is unclear if there is money to be made on Mars. SpaceX is still in the early stages of developing the technology required for a Mars settlement, including the Starship rocket and spaceship system. Musk hopes to launch hundreds of satellites aboard Starship before sending humans to Mars. The settlers would need air-tight habitats to protect them from the planet's toxic air and radiation. However, the economic situation on Mars for at least the first 100 years would be uncertain. Musk's plan for making Mars habitable involves terraforming, but it is highly resource-intensive and may not be feasible. There are no known resources on Mars that would be valuable enough to mine and sell back to Earth. Musk has acknowledged this, but the concept of terraforming is deeply ingrained in SpaceX's culture.
