The US government has put forward a proposal to crack down on billing practices by cable companies. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) plans to ban early-termination fees and introduce new rules that could result in consumer refunds if a subscriber cancels their plan mid-month. The aim is to combat "junk fees" and enhance competition in the cable and satellite industry. The proposed rules could benefit Americans who want to switch providers or are forced to do so due to a relocation. FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel described the current tactics used by providers to retain subscribers as aggravating and unfair. The move aligns with President Joe Biden's efforts to increase competition and address junk fees across various sectors of the economy. However, Republicans on the FCC opposed the proposal, arguing that it unfairly targets one industry and may face legal challenges. The FCC will seek public feedback on the proposal before making a final decision.
