Airlines are still recovering from a day of severe storms that affected the eastern half of the United States on Friday. As of Saturday evening, over 1,200 flights were canceled and 4,700 were delayed nationwide. This is an improvement from Friday's numbers, but airports in the Midwest and Northeast are still facing significant travel delays. In Michigan, where a large number of customers are without power, Detroit's Metropolitan Wayne County airport has delayed 40% of its outgoing flights, while Buffalo Niagara International airport has canceled 60% of its flights. Airports in Chicago, Denver, and Boston are also experiencing delays. These travel disruptions come after a difficult week for airlines due to the grounding of Boeing 737 Max 9 aircraft. United and Alaska Airlines, the two largest carriers using the Max 9, have canceled the most flights as a result. They have announced that all flights on their Max 9 planes will be canceled until mid-January.
