The presidents of Harvard University, MIT, and the University of Pennsylvania are set to testify before Congress about antisemitism on college campuses. The hearing, scheduled for December 5, will be conducted by the House Committee on Education and the Workforce. The hearing comes after tensions have risen on campuses following the terror attacks by Hamas against Israel. Republican Rep. Virginia Foxx, who chairs the committee, aims to hold university leaders accountable for antisemitism. The announcement of the hearing does not mention any plans to investigate Islamophobia or other forms of hate. The hearing will include testimony from the presidents of Harvard, MIT, and Penn, who are committed to combating antisemitism and ensuring a safe learning environment for their students. Recent weeks have seen numerous protests and counterprotests on college campuses, some of which have turned violent. The Department of Education has initiated an investigation into seven schools, including Cornell, Columbia, and Penn, following complaints of antisemitism and Islamophobia. Some donors have threatened to withdraw their support in response to how schools have handled alleged acts of antisemitism. Private-equity billionaire Marc Rowan has organized a campaign to remove Penn President Liz Magill, with support from prominent alumni. Hedge fund manager Leon Cooperman has criticized students protesting against Israel. Israeli Minister Nir Barkat warned that American universities failing to address antisemitism will face consequences. In response to criticism, some universities have announced new measures to combat antisemitism, including the creation of task forces and action plans.
