Alaska Airlines and United Airlines have experienced numerous flight cancellations due to issues with their Boeing 737 Max 9 aircraft. The Federal Aviation Administration grounded over 150 of these aircraft after a piece of the fuselage blew off an Alaska Airlines flight, causing damage to the plane and injuring passengers. Both airlines have found loose hardware or bolts in the assembly of door plugs on their Boeing 737 Max 9s. The FAA has ordered the grounding of affected Max 9s for inspection, and neither airline has indicated when flights on these planes will resume. The FAA is also conducting an investigation into Boeing's quality control regarding the door plug failure. United Airlines has canceled a significant number of Max 9 flights and is awaiting final approval on the inspection process. Boeing has pledged to cooperate with the investigations. A class action lawsuit has been filed against Boeing on behalf of the passengers of the Alaska Airlines flight. United Airlines has faced additional challenges in 2023, including flight cancellations and delays.
