The resurgence of bird flu has caused a significant increase in egg prices, and there is a possibility that it could happen again next year. Recent data from the US Department of Agriculture shows that hundreds of chicken flocks have tested positive for HPAI, resulting in the death of millions of birds. This outbreak is more severe than the one in 2015, which caused the death of over 50 million birds. The highly contagious disease can quickly spread among flocks, potentially leading to a decrease in supply and an increase in chicken and egg prices. One of the largest egg producers in the US, Cal-Maine Foods, has reported a positive case at one of its facilities and has stopped production there. The company is following USDA protocols and shifting production to other locations. In Ohio, millions of chickens have been slaughtered due to bird flu outbreaks. In the past, high egg prices resulted in increased inventories and oversupply, causing prices to crash. However, if bird flu cases continue to rise, it is uncertain how high prices could go and how long they may remain high. Wholesale prices of chicken eggs have already spiked in November. Egg producers plan their flocks based on demand during the holiday season, with increased demand seen during Thanksgiving and Christmas.
