In-N-Out is permanently closing one of its restaurants in Oakland, California due to rampant crime in the city. Despite efforts to create safer conditions, customers and employees have been consistently victimized by car break-ins, theft, and armed robberies. The Oakland location, which has been open for nearly two decades and is near the airport, will close on March 24. This closure marks the first time In-N-Out has closed a restaurant in its 75-year history. The decision was made because the frequency and severity of crimes encountered by customers and employees make it unsafe to continue operating. While the Oakland location was busy and profitable, In-N-Out cannot ask its stakeholders to visit or work in an unsafe environment. The affected employees, approximately 100 individuals, will either transfer to a nearby restaurant in San Francisco or receive severance. The closure comes as crime rates have increased in Oakland, with burglaries up 23% and motor vehicle thefts up 44% in 2023 compared to the previous year. Other businesses, such as Starbucks and Target, have also closed in Oakland and other cities due to concerns about crime.
