The European Union is using its new regulations to crack down on pornography sites such as Pornhub, Stripchat, and XVideos. These sites have been classified as "very large online platforms" (VLOPs) and are now subject to stricter standards regarding age verification, content moderation, and transparency. The European Commission found that all three platforms had over 45 million average monthly users in the EU, meeting the threshold for becoming a VLOP. The sites now have four months to comply with the new rules, which include preventing the spread of non-consensual sexual content and deepfake pornography, implementing age verification tools, and reporting criminal offenses to law enforcement. They are also required to undergo external audits and publish transparency reports every six months. Violators of the Digital Services Act can be fined up to 6% of their annual global revenue. The European Commission has recently requested more information from TikTok, X, and Facebook parent Meta regarding their measures to combat illegal content and disinformation. They have also opened a formal investigation into X for various issues, including its handling of content related to the Israel-Hamas war and its new paid verification system introduced by Elon Musk.
