The New York attorney general's office has filed a lawsuit against SiriusXM, accusing the satellite radio company of trapping customers in subscriptions and making it difficult for them to cancel. The investigation found that SiriusXM forces subscribers to contact an agent to cancel, and intentionally prolongs the process to prevent cancellations. New York AG Letitia James stated that this difficult cancellation process is illegal and companies have a legal obligation to make it easy for customers to cancel. SiriusXM responded by stating that it offers a variety of cancellation options and intends to vigorously defend against the allegations. The investigation also found that SiriusXM trains its agents to persuade customers not to cancel by engaging them in lengthy conversations and offering retention offers. The lawsuit seeks compensation for affected customers, penalties for fraud, and restitution for violating New York's laws. Affected customers are encouraged to report problems to the attorney general's office. SiriusXM has approximately 35 million subscribers, with two million in New York.
