The US Supreme Court has agreed to hear a case involving Starbucks, in which the coffee company was ordered to rehire workers who had been fired for their involvement in forming a union. In February 2022, Starbucks fired seven workers in Memphis, Tennessee, who were actively working towards unionization. The National Labor Review Board (NLRB) filed a petition against Starbucks, claiming that the employees were wrongfully terminated. A federal judge ruled in favor of the NLRB, stating that the workers must be rehired. Starbucks appealed the decision, and now the Supreme Court has decided to take up the case. This is just one of the many rulings against Starbucks in recent years, as the company has faced accusations of anti-unionization efforts. Starbucks has been involved in several NLRB and court battles related to unionization efforts. The company has also faced criticism for firing workers involved in unionizing efforts in Buffalo and for providing increased wages and benefits only to non-union employees. While Starbucks argues that courts should use the same standard to determine whether to grant NLRB injunctions, Starbucks Workers United, the employee union, has labeled the company's actions as "illegal union busting." Starbucks has denied using an "anti-union playbook" and claims to respect its employees' right to collectively organize.
