On Monday, December 11, 2023, Haraz Coffee House in Dearborn, Michigan, closed its doors in support of a global strike demanding a ceasefire in Gaza. Owner Hamzah Nasser closed all 12 locations of his cafés in several states as part of the strike. The strike was called by Palestinian groups after the United States vetoed a UN Security Council resolution for a humanitarian ceasefire. Businesses across the United States, including over 270 in the Chicago area alone, temporarily closed in solidarity with the strike. Many individuals also pledged to refrain from work and shopping. The strike gained support from Palestinian journalists, Motaz Azaiza and Bisan Owda, who have a large following on social media. The strike aimed to peacefully protest and draw attention to the ongoing violence in Gaza. Participants, like Alex Tarzikhan in Washington, DC, felt a moral obligation to join the strike and show solidarity with Palestinians. The strike received widespread support and participation, despite some backlash and threats received by participants.
