Waymo, the self-driving car division of Alphabet, has issued a recall for its self-driving car software after two of its vehicles were involved in separate crashes with the same truck in Phoenix, Arizona. The incidents occurred when two Waymo cars encountered a tow truck pulling a pickup truck at an angle. Both cars misinterpreted the situation and incorrectly predicted the truck's movement, resulting in collisions. Waymo informed the relevant authorities and made changes to its vehicle software after investigating the incidents. The company installed the updated software on its fleet of self-driving Jaguar I-Paces. Waymo considers this recall a demonstration of its commitment to safety and transparency. While self-driving cars are promoted as safer than human drivers, they still encounter unusual situations known as "edge cases." Waymo's actions follow a similar incident involving Cruise, General Motors' self-driving subsidiary, which also issued a recall for its software after a vehicle struck a pedestrian in San Francisco. Cruise has halted testing and has not resumed operations.
