Ticket prices for sporting events have increased significantly, making it unaffordable for many fans to attend games. The surge in prices can be attributed to limited supply, increased competition among higher-income individuals, dynamic pricing on ticket-resale platforms, and the construction of new stadiums with luxury suites and premium seats. This trend has turned attending games into a luxury experience, which is desired by team owners and major sports leagues. Families are finding it difficult to afford tickets, but teams are more focused on television revenue. The average cost of an NFL ticket in 2023 was $120, and it cost $631 for a family of four to attend a game with additional expenses. MLB tickets also saw an increase in prices. The rise in ticket prices has outpaced overall consumer prices since 1999. Ticket-selling platforms like Ticketmaster and StubHub use dynamic pricing algorithms that adjust prices based on demand. Teams are hesitant to sell empty seats at low prices for fear of setting a precedent and discouraging fans from buying tickets at full price. Additionally, new stadiums have been built with reduced seating capacity, focusing on providing more premium seats and luxury boxes for higher revenue. This has resulted in fewer affordable seats available to fans.
